What is the difference between the terms GPWS and TAWS?

Operators are often confused by the names of the system that provides the Terrain Awareness function:
TAWS and GPWS
The generic name of the system that provides the Terrain Awareness function is the Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS). The TAWS alerts the flight crew in a timely manner of terrain proximity ahead of the aircraft in order to avoid Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT).

Honeywell was the first manufacturer to propose the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS),followed by the Enhanced GPWS (EGPWS) that provides enhanced terrain awareness functions.

Later on, the ACSS company released an integrated solution that combines the traffic awareness and enhanced terrain awareness functions for A320/A330/A340 aircraft: the Traffic and Terrain Collision Avoidance System (T2CAS), followed by the T3CAS combining Transponder with Traffic and Terrain Collision Avoidance System.

However, the term GPWS is commonly used to define TAWS, that may include either an EGPWS, a T2CAS, or a T3CAS.

Whereas EGPWS, T2CAS, and T3CAS are still trademarks, GPWS is used in many certification documents.

You can also find the GPWS term on cockpit panels and in the documentation of aircraft fitted with T2CAS or T3CAS.
