B. Examine the Airplane External Surface
S 212-002
(1) Do the tests that follow:
(a) Examine the Zone 1 (Fig. 201) surface for signs of a lightning strike.
1) Examine the internal and external surfaces of the nose radome.
a) Look at the honeycomb sandwich structure for burns, punctures, and pin holes.
2) Examine the metal structure for holes or pits and also look for burned or unusually colored skin or rivets.
3) Examine the external surfaces of the composite honeycomb sandwich components; look for discolored paint and burned, punctured, or delaminated skin plies.
S 342-003
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR ALL DAMAGE. FAILURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR DAMAGE CAN CAUSE MORE INTERNAL DAMAGE BECAUSE MOISTURE CAN GET IN.
(2) Repair or seal the damaged areas.
S 212-004
(3) Examine the Zone 2 (Fig. 201) surface for signs of a lightning strike.
(a) Make sure you look in the areas where one surface stops and the other surface starts.
(b) Examine the angle of attack (AOA) sensors.
(c) Examine the metal structure for holes or pits and look for burned or discolored skin or rivets.
(d) Examine external surfaces of composite honeycomb sandwich components.
1) Look for discolored paint, burned, punctured, or delaminated skin plies.
S 342-005
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR ALL DAMAGE. FAILURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR DAMAGE CAN CAUSE MORE INTERNAL DAMAGE BECAUSE MOISTURE CAN GET IN.
(4) Repair or seal the damaged areas.
S 332-007
(5) Examine the composite structure for damage you cannot see. Use instrumental NDI methods or tap test.
NOTE:
Damage you cannot see, for example delamination, can extend to the areas around the damaged area you can see. Delamination can be found by instrumental NDI procedures or by a tap test. For a tap test, use a solid metal disk and lightly hit the area adjacent to the damage area lightly. If the area is delaminated, you will hear a different sound than the sound of a solid bonded area. Refer to the Nondestructive Test Manual D6-37239.
S 332-006
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR ALL DAMAGE. FAILURE TO SEAL OR REPAIR DAMAGE CAN CAUSE MORE INTERNAL DAMAGE BECAUSE MOISTURE CAN GET IN.
(6) Repair or seal the damaged areas.
S 712-008
(7) Make sure the navigation lamps, rotary lights, and the landing lights operate.
S 212-009
(8) Do the tests of the flight controls that follow:
(a) If the rudder shows signs of a lightning strike, examine the surface hinges, bearings, and bondings for signs of damage.
(b) If the elevators show signs of a lightning strike, examine the surface hinges, bearings, and bondings for signs of damage.
(c) If the ailerons show signs of a lightning strike, examine the surface hinges, bearings, and bondings for signs of damage.
(d) If no damage is found, do a basic check of the flight controls as follows:
NOTE:
If the flight controls operate correctly after you do these steps, no more inspections are necessary.
1) Move the rudder, control wheel and control column in both directions.
2) Make sure there is full travel and they move freely.
NOTE:
Hold the nose wheel during the rudder check to prevent nose wheel movement. You can hold the nose wheel if you put in the steering lockout pin or remove the torsion link pin.
S 712-010
(9) Do a functional test of the rudder system if it did not operate correctly during the tests of the flight controls steps above ((AIRPLANES PRE-SB 27-1255: AMM 27-21-00/501) or (AIRPLANES POST-SB 27-1255: AMM 27-21-00/501)).
S 712-011
(10) Do a functional test of the elevator system if it did not operate correctly in the tests of the flight controls steps above (AMM 27-31-00/501).
S 712-012
(11) Do a functional test of the ailerons if they did not operate correctly in the tests the flight controls steps above (AMM 27-11-00/501).
S 212-013
(12) If the wingtips show signs of a lightning strike, examine the wingtips carefully.
(a) Also look carefully at the fuel vent outlet and surge tanks for signs of damage.
S 712-036
(13) Do an operational check of the digital flight control system (AMM 22-11-01/501).
C.
Examine the Static Dischargers
S 212-033
(1) Do the tests that follow:
(a) Visually examine all dischargers to make sure they are there and installed correctly on the mounting retainer.
1) Also make sure they are not broken.
(b) Examine the dischargers for damage as shown by a burned and roughened coating.
1) Also look for pitted metal discharger retainers.
(c) Examine the dischargers for broken, bent, or blunted tungsten pins.
1) Straighten any bent pins.
(d) Look for erosion of the discharger coating or peeling of the tip cup.
1) The leading edge erosion of the discharger must not extend behind more than 1/3 of the width of the discharger.
S 762-014
(2) Do a resistance test if there is a damaged static discharger (AMM 23-61-00/601).
D.
Airplane Internal Test
S 212-015
(1) If a lightning strike caused a system malfunction, do a full test of the defective system.
(a) Use the applicable maintenance manual section for that system.
S 732-016
(2) Do a check of the standby compass system only if the flight crew found a very large compass deviation (AMM 34-24-00/201).
NOTE:
Differences between the HSI or EHSI and Standby Magnetic Compass may not be more than 8 degrees (for FAA approval) or 4 degrees (for CAA approval) and the maximum positive and the maximum negative error may not be more than 10 degrees (for FAA approval) or 7 degrees (for CAA approval) for any compass point.
S 212-032
(3) Make sure that the fuel quantity system is accurate.
(a) Do the operational test for the FQIS type on your airplane:
