The 787 Maintenance Training Line and Base Course will train the mechanics on the electronic performance support systems that will be available for the 787
at the gate and in the hanger. The philosophy of the training program is to:
- simulate the fault isolation environment
- use support data rather than training data
- be performance based
- web based
- available just in time and at the point of use.
Objectives
Terminal Objective:
Upon completion of the line and base course the students will be able to:
- Efficiently perform necessary routine and non-routine maintenance.
- Perform all work in accordance with local regulatory requirements for practical training.
Enabling objectives:
Upon completion of the line and base course, the students will be able to:
- Effectively use airplane electronic performance tools (e.g. EFB, CMC, toolbox).
- Effectively use maintenance electronic performance tools (e.g. Maintenance laptop, Toolbox, MBF).
- Feel comfortable and confident working on the airplane, especially with new 787 technologies.

correct action. The lesson includes how to do a quick composite repair.

Identify common terms used to describe composite materials.
Describe the basic design of the 787 primary structures.
Define terms used to describe common types of damage to composite structure.
Define the term allowable damage limit.
Describe the symptoms of lightning damage to composites.
Using close visual inspection, tap test, and/or ramp damage checker, determine the extent of sample damage.
Given sample damage and access to Toolbox, use the damage evaluation process to determine the correct action.
Given the steps to perform a quick composite repair (QCR2), arrange the steps in order

(1) Purpose
Teaching Points
1. The Boeing 787 uses more composite materials in its airframe and primary
structure than any previous Boeing commercial airplane.
2. Because of the extensive use of composites, it is important to understand
terms and concepts about composite materials.
3. In addition to more composite materials, the geometry of the 787 structure
is different from previous models.
4. It is also important to understand the difffernces between the evaluation of
damage to metallic structure and damage to composite structure.
5. As a mechanic or engineer responsible for maintaining the 787, you should
understand the many inspection methods available for composite structure.
6. The repair options for composites are numerous.
- A repair option available on the 787 is the Quick Composite Repair.
