The angle of airflow (AOA) sensor for each system provides a signal which represents airplane angle of attack. The sensors are located on the outside of the fuselage below each pilot's side window. The sensor consists of an aerodynamic vane which pivots to position three internal synchro transmitters. In flight, the vane takes a position parallel to the airflow passing over it. The sensor provides separate outputs to the stall management computer and to the autopilot.

The AOA sensor measures the direction of airflow relative to the fuselage. The sensor vane aligns itself with the prevailing airstream, rotating a central shaft. At the opposite end of the shaft, a gear drives position resolvers. The resolvers are powered by 26V, 400 Hz current and transform rotational position into an electrical output. This electrical output is proportional to the angle of attack. A viscous damper in the AOA vane stabilizes vane movements and reduces the effects of turbulence.
